Life on the Beach

Growing up in Miami has its pluses… Jota is right on the beach in his Florida home. For this visual assignment, I had to take a photo and use an app to crop me somewhere else. I also decided to make this assignment for my character, Jota.

Photo on 1-31-15 at 4.28 PM

Jota took a day trip to the beach! I used my iMacs Photo Booth and had a background of a sunset. All you have to do is let the background clear and once that is done, you step in front of the camera and it does its best to see the changes from the empty background to you in the background. Life is good in Miami! Peep the safari hat… Jota is too pasty to go to the beach without it.

Thirsty?

For this Visual Assignment, you had to take the last three objects you had your last three drinks in and arrange them in a pyramid, then telling a story about the three objects. Here are my three:get-attachment-1Classics, huh? Hahah so let me tell you bout my night last night…

Its a Friday night and its time to loosen up with friends after a long week of hard work. I went to the local ABC store and picked up some Fireball cinnamon whiskey, the stuff that helps college kids dance without caring how dumb they look while doing it… After a night out and drinking responsibly, Im in dire need of water. I chug the bottle violently until its empty. I crash right afterwards, sleeping like a rock until noon the next day. My roommates wake me up from my slumber and invite me to get lunch on campus. I join them on the journey and get a buffalo chicken wrap with an ice cold lemon lime gatorade from the soda fountain. Wish they had blue gatorade… Blue is better.

Pants?

Wanted ProfessorMy Professor has been hiding his location, not just from me, but the entire ds106 community. Even Jim Groom doesn’t know where he is… Somewhere in the Pennsylvania mountains.  We need to find his location to make sure he is wearing pants, (inside joke) right Jim? This is my second go around with professor Bond is a wealth of knowledge and he always seems to have valuable input on every topic of discussion.

Telling a story with Pixels – Photoreflection

Photography has always been a part of my life because of my dad. He has been a photographer for a majority of his life as a hobby and has a lot of knowledge about a wide array of photography topics. We actually have a photo-studio in our basement at home for portraits that he uses quite often. Throughout the years, he has taught me the basics, allowing me to be pretty confident with a camera.  I also took a photography class in high school for an entire year growing my skill set. I dont have a fancy DSLR (digital single-lens reflex camera) like my dad who has 3 or 4 of them, rather, I just have my iPhone 6 plus which has a 8-megapixel iSight camera with 1.5µ pixels and a new Gopro HERO 4+ Silver camera. These meet my needs so Im happy.

white-apple-logo-images-6gopro-logo-TRUE-BLACK-BACKGROUND-smallI take a lot of action photography with my GoPro including all kinds of sports from soccer shot on frame in the summer to skiing down the slopes in the winter. With my iPhone I take a lot of photos of friends and random things that catch my eye. I like clean, sharp photos. if its any bit blurry, I’m not a fan. I like a large depth of view and the GoPro offers that. after reviewing the resources on the noir106 website, I think I want to improve the emotion shown on photos; even if its my own emotion with the choice of subject or the actual emotion of the subject I choose. Also, I liked the idea of instead of searching for the perfect photograph, let the perfect photograph come to you. What I mean by this is that I might pick a location and let the subject enter at random. Might be an exciting activity!

Creating Daily Creates, Daily pt. 2

Week 3 of ds106 and completing 3 daily creates is a requirement!

1/28/15 – Make 2048

I have played this game before, 2048, consuming hours of my life that I will never get back. I guess I saw this daily create and decided to pay tribute to the game…and then never play it again. I had to re-design the game, replacing the classic number tiles with anything that I want. first I decided I was going to use US currency (1$, 5$, etc.) as the “new” tiles because I like money lol next, I had to figure out how to photoshop the new tiles over the old ones. I ended up downloading a collage maker app on my iPhone that offered the same 4×4 format that 2048 is played in. I went to google images on my phone and got pictures of bills and a green square, saved them, and then uploaded them in the collage maker app. Super easy! Can you get to the $1,000,000 tile?

1/29/15 – A Silent Movie About Silence

As you can see, I had some trouble with this one. I had to make a silent movie about silence. I was exhausted when I was thinking how to do this, and BAM, an idea. I decided I was going to recored myself sleeping during a nap. Yeah, I know, its weird and creepy but it got the job done! I set up my GoPro Hero 4+ Silver on its tripod and my iPhone’s alarm for 35 minutes. I hit record and the sack at the same time, having no problem falling asleep. 35 minutes was up in no time and stopped the recording. I uploaded the video to the GoPro editing software and put a night effect on it as well as a 3200% speed increase for the movie. Nobody would want to watch me sleep for 35 minutes haha but yeah, It came out pretty neat I think. I titled the video “My Dreams are Loud” to contrast the title of the assignment.

1/30/15 – Make A Paper Sculpture

The last daily create of the week for me was to create a paper sculpture and record yourself doing so. Easy enough. I had some trouble trying to think what I could build at first, but I decided to go with an all-time classic – the paper airplane. Once again, my Gopro was used, this time suction cupped to my iMac screen for a pretty cool angle. with a clear desk and a fresh piece of printer paper, I began to work my magic, narrating the process along the way too. Its funny because it normally only takes me about  30 seconds to make one of these planes, but this time I kept thinking about the video aspect, slowing me down I guess. The plane came out exactly as planned, woot.

Call Me Dora ‘Cause I Got a Backpack

What’s in Jota’s bag?

DCIM100GOPROG0080557.

For this visual assignment, you have to take a picture of what your character would carry in his or her backpack on a daily basis and then share a little info for each item! Jota (My character) seems to be tech savvy and a bit risqué.

List: (No order)

iphone 6 Plus: Have to stay connected with the world and stay ahead of the game all while doing it in style. Also great for calling mom whenever Jota needs some advice

Wallet: Credit cards, ID’s, cash, Insurance cards, Miami Top Golf membership card. Business cards. All essentials, all neatly organized.

Keys: Car keys, house key, NightClub master key, bottle opener

Extra Cash: Jota, also known as J-Money by his closest friends, always carries around some extra bills just incase life throws him an unexpected curve ball. Too drunk to drive you and that gorgeous lady back home from the bar? No worries, Jota is always prepared.

Oakley Sunglasses: Haters gonna hate so always carry some hater blockers. Also, Jota is a fashionable guy, always looking sharp and classy!

Pens & Sticky Pad: When you live life in the fast lane, a lot of information is spat at you on a daily basis. Jota will make sure he doesn’t miss one detail in that conversation he just had with you.

Versace Cologne: Life tip from Jota… Smell good. Your scent might make a lasting impression on that lady you met at the bar.

Condom: Like I said earlier… Jota is always prepared. Be safe.

Ipad: Nothing says business man more than a tablet with all the apps to wow anybody… or waste some spare time playing your favorite ipad game.

MacBook: If Jota doesn’t feel like wasting his time on games, he is prepared to get some work done for his new nightclub. From reading emails to typing proposals, Jota is a busy man.

Breathalyzer: Is Jota an alcoholic? lets hope not…

Flashlight: Being left in the dark is no fun. Jota’s dad told him to always have one handy. Never know when you could save the day with a little extra light.

Police Baton: This is considered a deadly weapon. This is meant for self protection. This item is to be handled responsibly and maturely. Other than that, no comment.

SO. MUCH. WORK. Its only week two and the demands of this class are already taking their toll on me. I have accomplished a lot over the past week and my site is as active as its ever been!

Started off the week by watching the weekly video and we still don’t know where Paul is and I have noticed some hate toward Jim within the Google hangout. but thats none of my business… Anyways for this weekly post Im gonna go down the list of demands that we have been assigned and spew out my input and thought process behind each one. lets get started!

1. Read Some Noir: I read the required The Postman Always Rings Twice along with The Shadow and The Killers. I wrote a blog post earlier in the week reflecting this called “Reading Some Neuer”. It goes into detail of why I named the blog post after a German soccer goalkeeper as well as each of the three pieces of noir literature. All three unique in their own way but all have defined similarities. Check out the link for more on the noir readings!

2. Write a Character Dossier: The next task was to go to the noir106 website and create a fictional character under the Character Dossiers page. I entered in all the required and optional information the page asked for and when I got to the physical description and bio part of my fictional character, i let my imagination free. Now, the funny thing is I do not remember what I submitted exactly so its hard for me to describe him perfectly. His name is Jota and was born and raised in Miami. He just graduated from college and opened his own night club in the biggest party city in Florida. He is a bright individual with lots of potential to succeed and will do anything it takes to make it big! I really hope there is a way to find out or view what you submitted in the way of character information because I never copy/pasted it anywhere else… Would have been smart to do that. Ill contact my professor and find out! If I do get the information, i’ll write up a separate blog post going into greater detail of Jota!

3. Writing Assignments: lol so this is a perfect example where you should read the directions completely and thoroughly… I totally went to the ds106 assignment bank and just started doing assignments for stars as we need 8 stars… My first assignment being under visual assignments. I didn’t process the WRITING ASSIGNMENT requirement part very well. So I kinda wasted time doing it and posting a blog about it :'( Once I realized that, I had the task of getting 8 stars in the WRITING ASSIGNMENT part of the assignment bank lol.

Ill start off with the required assignment of write an alternative ending of one of the noir pieces I read earlier in the week. I rewrote an ending to The Shadow and it turned out ehhhhh okay I guess. I wasn’t too thrilled with it as mentioned in an earlier blog post I did dedicated to just that. Here is a link to that post! That was worth 3.5 stars. The Next two assignments were a lot more enjoyable. I jotted down what I was thankful for and I gave my reasoning behind the title of my blog which is “Surpassing the Dimension of Time” Here are separate links to posts I did on each… Thankful & Blog Title. 2.5 and 2 stars respectively for a total of 8

I actually did a total of 12 hahah but thats my own fault! Here is a link to the blog post on the extra assignment I did.

4. Complete Daily Creates: One word… FUN. I had a blast with these this week. I stupidly waited will Thursday to stat these so I had to do them all leaving me with one day where I could pass if i didn’t like the task. Not smart / risky. Note to self, do not wait to do these. But yeah, absolutely loved these daily creates. I yodeled, took an eye selfie, and made a word painting. Click here to read more about them!

5. Customize Your BlogSo once again I lucked out. One advantage of having a blog set up and ready to go before the course started is that it doest need much editing in the way of customization. I am currently using the “Highwind” theme which has a clean look to it. its simple and i’m a simple guy. I chose a black background as it clashes well with my favorite color, a light almost sky blue, blue. I already had Jetpack installed so I was good to go their. I did however need to install Akismet which helps prevent spam on my blog. I went to the word press dashboard, clicked on plugins, searched “Akismet” and clicked the green install button. bam, easy. It’s already blocked nearly 100 span comments. Lastly, I did the same thing as the Akismet plugin as the Comments Reloaded. easy peasy lemon squeezy.

Its been a Hell of a week. I spent easily 5 fold the amount of time on work in this class over any other current class i’m taking at UMW. Its rewarding though… seeing something you created grow with.. well.. more stuff you created lol

As always, Its been a pleasure!

Incase that you don’t understand the meme at the top… Its from a popular Youtube Video “David After Dentist.” Check it out for a laugh!

Creating Daily Creates, Daily

January 22, 2015 – Yodeling

Its a Thursday night, $1 beer night at Brock’s bar downtown Fredericksburg VA and my roommates and I are pre-gaming for it. in the midst, I found out that the daily create is to yodel haha so I got my roommates to join in and we all drunkenly yodeled together. I might have been a little too intoxicated going back and listening to it, but hey… it’s interesting! and I tagged and uploaded it correctly too so good job drunk Jack! Sober Jack is prouda you!

January 23, 2015 – Eye Selfie

I tweeted my second daily create in addition to posting it to Flickr (You can find the link to the Flickr post in the embedded tweet). I had to take an #EyeSelfie. I took my iPhone 6 Plus and took a pic with the front facing camera. It didn’t come out as good as if I had taken it with the better back camera so I went to the bathroom and looked at the mirrors reflection so I could see the screen of my iPhone and take the picture. I think its really neat!  I did an edit with photoshop but haven’t posted it anywhere so this edit with be blog special!

January 25, 2015 – Word Painting

UMW

For the last of the 3 daily creates, I had to create a word painting… What is that? Still don’t know what it is really. I clicked the link provided in the daily create. (https://www.pinterest.com/blue_mug/wayne-white/) for inspiration or ideas and I saw a cardboard cutout sculpture which lead me to this! I took an empty case of Corona and decided to cut the letters of “UMW” out. I googled “College Font” and I just eyed lines on them and used scissors to cut them out  It took longer than I thought it would which kinda sucked but it was worth it because I have them to put up on a wall in my college home.

The Title of my Blog isn’t Blog…

For my last writing assignment of the week, I chose Whats in a Name? I am assigned the task of explaining why I named my blog the name I gave it. Surpassing the Dimension of Time is the title of my blog… but why?

Interstellar-Main-One-Sheet-QUAD

Thats why.

I was so moved by this movie with the message it gave, I actually wrote it down on my iPhone as soon as I thought of it. “Gravity and love are the only two things that can cross the dimension of time.” This is the lesson I learned. I would have made that quote the title of my blog but I felt it was too long. So in result, I got “Surpassing the Dimension of Time. Time is infinite, but what if love and gravity are much greater than that of time? It may be hard to wrap your mind around it but its something to ponder. I do not know how you create a quote… but what I just said there earlier is probably one of the most meaningful sentences I have ever said.

Im Thankful That I Have Stuff To Be Thankful About

10 seconds. What are you thankful for? On your marks, get set, GO!

For my second writing assignment of the week I chose 10 seconds of thanks. You have 10 seconds to write down as many things you can that your thankful for. I put my iphone stopwatch on and frantically started typing… here is what I came up with!

Family. Health. School. Friends.

it was easy to think of those 4. I was limited to how fast I can type so that sucked. I would have liked more time however I think that time restraint makes you put only your most important. I am so fortunate and lucky to have these 4 things. So many people around the world don’t have these and often for the people who do, they take them for granted.

Family: My family has been there for me since the beginning and still are. I love them more than anything.

Health: I have food and water available every day and have access to medicine that keeps me well.

School: I am getting an education that will allow me to be successful in my near and distant future.

Friends: Life is short and I am glad I am able to share the experience with great people I care about.

This was an activity I think every one should do! I have been told it is good for your health to write down 1 new thing a day that you are thankful for. Its a comparable activity, both with great benefits!
